Concept:

The recognition of the cooperative dance efforts in the Philippines has not been fully articulated and discussed by and among members of the dance community. It is timely to think and talk about dance in its unique Filipino dimensions and expressions especially now that that the dance network is expanding within and beyond the country.

Conversations and Connectivity in Dance will provide the platform for fleshing out of very important information and insight regarding the practice of dance in the country—its production, consumption, organization, and location in the Philippine creative industries and society at large.

The conversations to be facilitated will present the complexity and multiplicity of identities, experiences, and pathways of Filipino dancers. It is expected, however, that the discussions will greatly highlight similarities and points of convergence that will allow the community to thrive despite the many challenges.

The past years has witnessed a concerted series of campaigns by personalities in Philippine Dance, the reassertion of their movement vocabularies and identities, and the search for political and symbolic capital to secure their own practice. Most of these initiatives, resistances, new stories hint that there is a gradual emphatic awareness of common issues and potential alliances for the promotion of the art and need for collective movement. The significance of these initiatives and movements are not only intrinsically important to dancers themselves but have global significance for the construction of policies and systems that will guarantee the protection and continued progress of dance, its diversity and dignity.

The two-day conference will feature two plenary sessions, Dance in Community, Communities of Dance and Emerging Perspectives in Dance Performance and Dance Studies. To provide opportunities for dance practitioners to engage one another and to contribute to discourse on the performing arts, the conference will host roundtable discussions on salient issues regarding the practice of dance in the Philippines.
